The use of Desktop PCs has reduced after the advancement of latest technological devices like Notebooks, Laptops, Tablets, and Smart Phones etc. In recent years, the desktop computer has lost its hold in the market. Advances in technology have created smaller, cheaper and lighter computers and other technological devices. The Desktop PCs have now been replaced by notebooks, tablets and smart phones which are able to do the tasks that used to require larger machines. The notebooks, laptops and smart phones have following advantages over Desktop PCs: No more long cables for connection, the space occupied by monitor, keyboard and CPU separately, separate modem and speakers are also not needed.

Computers have become necessary not only at work place but they are even becoming necessary at your home to communicate with your near and dear ones. We can say that we are totally dependent on computers. For a long time period, desktop PCs were the preferred choice of people around the world. But now with the advancement of latest technology such as Wi-Fi which is easy to find at different locations and often free, mobile connectivity is easier and faster with the recent developments in social networking and technology, people prefer laptops, smart phones and tablets more over traditional Desktop PCs.

Advantages of Smart Phones and Tablets over Desktop PCs

  • Tablets and Smart Phones are more user friendly and compact as compared to Desktop PCs- No need to sit down on desktop PC or carry a laptop when you have Smart Phones and Tablets with you. But still the Business class users will use laptops also.
  • Voice Recognition Software in Tablets and Smart Phones- There are different voice recognition software used           in smart phones such as “Siri” which is used in Apple iPhones and other similar software has reduced the need of keyboard.
  • Touch Screens in Tablets and Smart Phones – Nowadays with the development of latest technology, people prefer to use touch screens rather than mouse which was widely used with traditional Desktop PCs. Touch screens are more convenient and easy to use. Now there is no need to attach your mouse and keep a mouse pad under the mouse for its proper motion.
  • Cloud based storage and software in Tablets and Smart Phones- Cloud storage is online storage which is widely used nowadays. We can take the example of Apple’s new iCloud and Google Docs has become most popular as Cloud storage. Users can access the data directly from the cloud that is online storage available on internet. No need to worry if you do not have storage space on your computers or if you fear that your data on computers may be lost due to some virus or other problems.

Reasons why some people will still use Desktop PCs

  • Screen size: Some people will not find easy and convenient to read or surf the websites with smart phones, they will still prefer Desktop PCs. They think that they will only get the proper feel of visiting websites or watching videos or movies if they use Desktop PCs.

Data entry: Some people will prefer to use spread sheets on Desktop PCs or laptops rather than smart phones or tablets. They feel that they need arrow keys and numeric keys from 0 to 9 for ease of data entry.
